Rivertowns Visitors Guide
The Pennsylvania River Towns region is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, approximately thirty miles southeast of Harrisburg. It is home to many historic events and destinations throughout Columbia, Wrightsville and Marietta. Dating back to the mid 1700’s, this area was a major industrial and transportation hub; trains, steamboats and canals would make way for paper and silk mills, foundries, factories and flourishing businesses. During the Civil War, the wooden bridge spanning the Susquehanna and connecting Wrightsville with Columbia was burned in attempt to stop the Confederate soldiers from advancing east towards Philadelphia and New York. This move destroyed the bridge and veered the soldiers west where they would engage in the historic Battle of Gettysburg only days later.
Using our new interactive map, search the database of tourist destinations throughout the river town region. Bursting with history, the Columbia Market House is home to local vendors each week and downtown is riddled with antique shops and art galleries. Enjoy a delicious meal and a breathtaking view of the river at the historic John Wright Restaurant. Walk the streets of Marietta, known majorly today as a National Historic District, and stay in one of its intimate bed and breakfasts.
